First-class travel is no longer just for the wealthy…
When you fly in economy, you’ve experienced this sensation:
Dull, huh?
The worst aspect is that a flight in economy still costs hundreds of dollars (and this is just for flying domestic).
You can easily spend more than $1,000 on a flight in economy internationally.
and an intercontinental flight in first or business class? Easily $4,000 to $10,000 plus without exerting any effort.
It is what it is, after all.
The asking price is that.
But what do you do if you want to go in luxury but the tickets cost roughly five figures each?
Do you YOLO and spend all of your money?
Do you borrow money to pay for it?
Do you too want to win the lottery?
Unfortunately, most people think that’s what you have to do to fly first class.
I too once held that view.
For the majority of my life, I had the misconception that only the wealthy and powerful could travel in luxury.
I used to think that if you wanted to fly first class, you had to be a CEO, doctor, or Wall Street banker.
Either that, your parents had to be wealthy, or you had to hope your boss paid the tab.
In reality, though, it’s all a fiction.
Of course, some people choose to fly first class on a paid ticket.
But there is an alternative.
How I Unintentionally Started Travel Hacking
Like most people, I first learned about travel hacking when I had a ton of points and had to determine how to spend them.
Naturally, I could have exchanged my points for money.
On the website of my credit card provider, however, I then discovered this:
“Get up to twice the value when you buy travel.”
Wonderful, I thought.
It came at the perfect time since I needed a break from working so much.
So I signed into the travel website of my credit card provider and made my initial vacation to Mexico absolutely free.
I didn’t realize that I erred in three crucial ways.
The first travel hacking error is using the booking websites of credit card companies.
You might as well set your money on fire if you use sites like the one mentioned above.
My first significant error was this.
Yes, I did receive a “free” trip because I had accumulated so many points.
However, I was squandering 5–10 times the points’ worth.
With my points, I only received a few complimentary nights at a 3.5-star all-inclusive resort in Mexico.
And, lol, I didn’t even fly first.
Not exactly the ideal getaway I had envisioned.
Years of trying and failing later, I finally understood…
The absolute worst way to redeem your points is through portals.
no restrictions on admission.
Anyone can do it, really.
Most significant, though, is the fact that you should never use one.
Portals “make life easier.”
However, keep in mind that portals are also real “in-house” travel firms run by credit card companies.
You should also consider when credit card firms actually care about you.
Using portals is still a death sentence even if you had the appropriate kind of credit cards with the correct kind of points.
Which brings me to my next error…
Mistake #2 in Travel Hacking: Not Using the Correct Type of Card
The secret to effective travel hacking is using the proper kind of credit card to get the correct kind of points.
Sadly, far too many individuals see a credit card offering 1% to 2% limitless cash back with no annual fees and immediately assume:
Where can I sign up, OMG, this is so fantastic.
Not to worry, I also made this error.
These cards are marketed by credit card firms as the greatest invention since bread.
Additionally, these cards frequently have substantial advertising budgets and big-name celebrities endorsing them.
Samuel L. Jackson, you scumbag.
Unlimited cash-back credit cards may sound exciting, but they aren’t always the ideal choice for travelers.
You should concentrate on credit cards that provide you the most points possible for vacation.
We can only outplay credit card firms by doing this.
Third travel hacking error: Choosing budget airlines and standard lodging
If you searched up what is meant by a “average hotel,” you would find a picture like this:
I have nothing against Holiday Inn, believe me.
They are sufficiently clean, offer a free continental breakfast, and provide free WiFi.
Yippie…
That’s fantastic if it floats your boat.
But if you don’t have to, why choose average?
I already noted that my first trip with travel hacking involved an economy airline to a 3.5 star resort.
95% of people who try their hand at travel hacking settle for this.
They receive, at most, a complimentary, economy-plus airfare and a few nights in a 3- or 3.5-star hotel.
However, things don’t have to be that way.
In reality, as I’m about to demonstrate…
You can fly business or first class whenever you want for free, and you can stay in the swankiest 5-star hotels in the world (or pennies on the dollar).
Call me crazy, but I’d rather stay at the Waldorf Astoria than the Holiday Inn (I know, there isn’t a complimentary continental breakfast at the Waldorf, but I think I can manage).
